Natural Disasters over the past months

I have no idea where to begin. There have been so many natural disasters happen this year that it makes a person stop and think about what is really going on. First the tornado that ripped through Joplin and now the hurricane that has demolished the northeastern coastline. I was not a victim of either one but my heart breaks for all involved. I can’t imagine the devastation of such a thing. Now, FEMA is talking that they are running out of money and having to pull out of areas, such as Joplin, and go help the Northeast. I would hate to have to be the person to make that kind of decision. There are so many people with such great needs and only so many people and so much money to go around.

According to the Los Angeles Times the hurricane left behind between two billion and seven billion dollars worth of damage. It appears that the majority of the dollars that are going to be needed to repair the damage will be left up to the taxpayers because of the lack of people that had flood insurance. Upon searching the internet for more facts on the hurricane I ran across a website that was absolutely sickening to read. It is called CHARLEYWORLD and can be found at http://www.hawaiireporter.com . He was talking about the coverage on the hurricane and how he found it to be “not so much hysterical but hysterically hilarious”. He seemed to find it absolutely hilarious that reporters were reporting their stories from outside in the pouring rain and severe winds and in his opinion was not necessary and did nothing but make them look stupid for choosing to not report from inside. He said that hurricane Irene was “barely even a hurricane”. He said that the storm “only killed twenty people” and his argument was that he thought so many other people would have died from drunk driving and such if the storm had not hit at all. I was just appalled at his writings and have made a conscious choice to never visit that website again.

I really don’t understand how people can be so cold hearted. Being compassionate for human beings is not such a hard thing to do if you are the person that God has created you to be. Making jokes about people that are hurting and in true need of help is sickening and I can’t believe those people can honestly lay their head down at night and feel as though they are a good person. Sometimes I think surely they know, deep down they have got to know….don’t you think?

Good Morning America said this morning that some of the cities affected were already dealing with looters. What could possibly be so compelling about stealing from people when they are at their absolute lowest or anytime for that matter.http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/

I guess my bottom line is….my heart truly goes out to the people that have been affected by great tragedy in the past months and I have tried to volunteer every chance I have had but still feel that it’s not enough. For all of my fellow students that live in Joplin or any area that has been through a great disaster please know that there is someone out there (myself) that truly cares about what you are going through and if there was any way I could make it all go away I would. I am so proud of the city of Joplin and the enormous strength that the entire city and the people that live in and around it have. I am proud to call this area my home even though I do live a good 50 miles from Joplin.

  1. I really enjoyed your post on natural disasters. I was just thinking this morning how crazy it has been around the states the past few months. Including the earthquake in Alaska this morning! I am totally with you on this one...it breaks my heart to see so many people suffering. But on the other end, I think it's been amazing to see how Americans have come together to help the population that has been affect by these disasters. I hope that every one that can, continues to do so.

  2. The thing I am most fascinated by is all of the outpouring of love, hope, volunteerism, and extraordinary donations. While some see the negative side of all tragedies, Joplin for example, came together in so many ways as did the entire nation and even the world shortly after this tragic event happened. The other positive aspect is that people are still here, families who lost everything stayed, and everyone came together for the schools to give our children some form of normalcy in their lives. Eventually the obliterated landscape will be rebuilt, we will have a high tech high school, trees will be full grown, parks will be full of children, and the hospitals will again be full of patients, doctors, and nurses. But even then, there will be those with terrifying images burned into their minds and those same people will also have the images of hope that conquered even the darkest of thoughts. In honor of all of those who were impacted by the Joplin tornado - including myself - I was drawn to make those memories of hope a permanent part of me by getting a tattoo that represents the hope and healing that has happened and that is still to come. Thank you for your support to all the victims of all the tragedies - it is greatly appreciated.

  3. I enjoyed reading your post. I also cant believe the things that come out of peoples mouths. Its sad to see how the human life and soul has become so meaningless to some people.
